Why Training For Mission?

We have all heard the horror stories about well meaning Christians going to visit their missionary friends or Church Mission Teams being sent to support their Mission Partners in the Developing World, and ending up doing far more damage than good in their attempts to lend a hand!
The US Short Term Team that gave away Gameboys to street kids in South America! The kids threw away the Gameboys and kept the batteries because they perceived a greater value in them! The national agency that sent medical supplies and clothing in containers which they located in "strategic" areas outside the city. Thousands of people travelled long distances from the rural areas to pick up the things donated for them, but when they returned to their village, their homes had been occupied by families from another tribe.
The teacher who tried to give away sweets in an African slum, causing a near riot! The ex Army Officer who offered money to a starving family in India - almost causing another riot!
Well meaning tourists who give money to child beggars on the streets, not realising they are funding a syndicate that bypasses the needs of the poor.

And so it goes on.

Training in Cultural Orientation is absolutely vital if we are going to honour God and the people we seek to serve.
